- W2915505360 abstract "My paper aims to focus on the theme of money as sign and symbol of personal identityand as social and political discourse in Frank Capra’s films. Money provides the core ofCapra’s films, the blood that runs in the veins to give life to the story. Its absence or excess, its corrupting influence or its honest gain abounds in Frank Capra’s movies. Startingwith his first silent feature film The Strong Man in (1926) and up to his last film PocketFull of Miracles in (1961), the theme of money in different films intertwines withreligion, love and the quest for personal success, and structures his narratives and itsaesthetics. The American mythical values of success, individualism and the self-mademanprovide Capra with the ideology and pictorial grammar that allows him to structurehis Manichaean approach to money, as an ideal or something malevolent. It is essentialto take into account the socio-economic and political discourse that Capra incorporatesin his films. Money echoes the events and the evolution of American society. Most of hissuccessful films with the famous ‘Capra Touch’ were made in the thirties during theGreat Depression. It would be impossible to approach films such as Meet John Doe orYou Can’t Take It with You without taking into account the despair and the destructiongenerated in this decade. In these films, the rich, bankers and industrialists are oftenportrayed with strong tyrannical and domineering characteristics; they are devoid oflove and humanity. Nevertheless, Capra leaves the possibility of redemption and in severalof his films; the intense experience of the events brings the rich man to radicallymodify his attitude and way of life. Moreover, Capra’s discourse on money contributesto Hollywood’s effort to pacify American society by expressing the hope of a better futureand magnifying the myth of the American dream and the unity of the nation." @default.
