- W2915614962 abstract "This chapter deals with Cold War Soviet internationalist actions from the Korean War onwards. In Cuba, Mongolia and Nicaragua, Soviet forces safeguarded these communist regimes against internal and external threats. The Soviet Union was engaged in a global contest and the Soviet armed forces which accomplished these missions were known as internationalists. Internationalist soldiers advanced the cause of the communist world revolution beyond their own national borders. Soviet military aid to Vietnam began after the Second World War as Ho Chi Minh battled the returning French for supremacy in Vietnam. The Soviet-Afghan War marked the apogee of Soviet internationalism. Afghanistan was a neighbouring country which had turned communist following a bloody military coup in 1978. Although the Soviet Union spent a considerable amount of national treasure and sacrificed the lives of many of its citizens to the pursuit of internationalism, the spread of world communism was not Soviet internationalism’s main goal." @default.
