- W2915902129 abstract "Introduction: Respiratory Synctial Virus (RSV) is one of the most important viral pathogens for lower respiratory tract infections in children. RSV infections show seasonal pattern peaking during winter which coincides with peaks in ambient concentrations of Nitric Oxide (NO). A potential link has been suggested in vitro and this study aims to investigate the association between ambient NO concentrations and hospital admission in children under the age of two diagnosed with RSV. Methods: Daily admission data were compiled from a major Children's hospital between November 2011 and March 2012. RSV infection was determined using Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on nasopharyngeal aspirates. Data on daily ambient NO concentrations were obtained from sentinel air monitors in the city. We used Poisson regression models adjusting for potential confounders to study association between RSV and NO. Results: The average daily admission count was small (about 3 per day) and the mean NO concentration was 26.4μg/m3. Admission rates were lower for older (≥ 3 months old) than younger children with relative risk (RR)=0.71, 95% CI: 0.58, 0.88. We found little evidence of association between daily RSV admission rates and ambient NO concentrations. There was a non-significant 3% increase in the rate of daily RSV admissions associated with a 10μg/m3 increase in ambient NO concentration (RR=1.03, 95% CI: 0.92, 1.16). Discussion: Though our findings showed little evidence of association, they should be viewed with caution due to the low number of daily events. It is possible that the apparent lack of association may be accounted for by the timing of the seasonal RSV epidemic in relation to peaks in NO concentrations. This would suggest that a larger study incorporating a wider range of RSV and NO peaks would determine whether such peaks enhanced the number of hospitalised cases of RSV infection in children." @default.
