- W2916085983 abstract "The Al/SiC/graphite hybrid nano-composites have attracted a considerable attention owing to their high wear resistance combined with a low friction coefficient. The presence of nano SiC particles increases the hardness and strength of these hybrid nano-composites and compensates for the weakening effects of graphite (Gr). In the present study, Al/SiC composite powders with different contents of embedded nano-sized SiC particles were initially processed via mechanical milling. Then a conventionally powder metallurgy (P/M) process route was utilized for processing of Al/SiC/2 vol%Gr hybrid composites by using 2 vol% of micron-sized graphite particles. The effect of SiC content on the tribological properties of these hybrid composites was investigated by pin-on-disc wear test method and compared with those of their counterparts with no Gr addition. The Al/SiC/Gr hybrid nano-composites exhibited improved wear resistance as compared with Al/SiC nano-composites. The wear rate and friction coefficient of these composites decreased with increased SiC content. SEM micrographs revealed that the wear mechanism was changed from mostly adhesive in the base alloy sample to the prominently abrasive and delamination wear for Al/SiC and Al/SiC/2 vol%Gr nano-composites, respectively." @default.
