The use of environmental resources of questionable microbial quality such as river water, for irrigation purposes, form valid grounds for concern on the overall microbial quality of fresh produce. In view of the frequently reported foodborne disease outbreaks caused by contaminated fresh produce, it is important that ssf are aware of the natural environment’s contributory potential to fresh produce contamination. Organic farming presents a bigger challenge because of the absence of chemical treatments that may contribute to a higher microbial burden. This study investigated the microbial quality of irrigation water and fresh organic produce farmed by ssf supplying the uMbumbulu Agri-Hub (SA). Irrigation water (sources: tap, river, dam and spring water) and lettuce from 4 different farmer cooperatives supplying the Agri-Hub were sampled monthly (Oct-Dec 2011) for the presence of total and fecal coliforms including Escherichia coli (E. coli) using the Most Probable Number (MPN) method. The pH and fecal coliform levels for all irrigation water samples analyzed were within the acceptable range of 6.5–8.5 and <1,000 MPN/100mL respectively. The lettuce met SA Department of Health standards of <200/g total coliforms at the time of sampling. E. coli levels were below the detection limit for both water and lettuce. In addition, the farming methods of 73 farmers were assessed via a survey. The results revealed that more than 40% of farmers used microbiologically safe tap water for irrigation and that trained farmers had a significantly better understanding of the importance of production hygiene than untrained farmers (p<0.01). These results reiterate the importance of interventions that build capacity and provide alternatives to possibly contaminated natural resources that may hinder ssf from accessing formal value chains" @default.
