- W2918073966 abstract "The novelty of integrated interventional radiology (IR) residencies has previously resulted in insufficient information on match statistics and low public knowledge on predictors of successful matching into integrated IR. Matching into integrated IR is highly competitive which creates a demand for improving the available knowledge on strong predictors for successful matching to applicants and mentors. This article reviews the recent result of the National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP) Charting Outcomes in the Match for 2018 U.S. Allopathic Seniors and Osteopathic Seniors in addition to the Results of the 2018 NRMP Program Director Survey. Permission for use of the data and reports was obtained from NRMP®. Comparison with other competitive specialties was made with regard to correlations to successful matching. Responses provided in the NRMP Charting the Outcomes for 2018 showed that IR was the most competitive specialty among all other specialties for both Allopathic and Osteopathic U.S. seniors. Yet, unlike other competitive specialties, United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 scores were weakly correlative with matching into integrated IR. Stronger positive correlation of matching was noted with number of contiguous ranks. PD survey responses showed PD have the strongest preference for perceived commitment to specialty based on reported mean importance rating (MIR). The greatest predictor of matching in IR was the number of contiguous ranks rather than strength of Step 1 scores. After 10 contiguous ranks, the chances of matching cross the 90% threshold whereas Step scores of 270 did not cross the 80% threshold. Compared to other competitive specialties, IR PDs had a significantly stronger preference for commitment to specialty in selection for interview invitations. Therefore the greatest predictor of matching in IR is primarily determined by perceived commitment to the field whether it is by clinical experience or extracurricular involvement. Yet, currently, only 33% of US medical schools offer radiology rotations to students which impacts commitment perception. These important correlations have not been previously reported." @default.
