- W2918158775 abstract "As 1990 draws to a close, I look back on a year that was especially exciting and productive for the Center. The year opened with an eighteen-event Festival lasting from February through May, peaked in the summer with a major acquisition of first and early editions and a grant award of $47,521 for the Bibliography Project (supplemented by in-kind and direct funding from San Jose State University for a total budget for the project of $103,744), and ended on jubilant notes with our fifth anniversary celebration in September and annual birthday celebration in December. The 1990 San Jose Festival, co-sponsored by the San Jose Symphony, the San Jose Chamber Music Society, and the Center, opened with the Center's Fourth Annual Young Pianists' Competition on February 10, with fortepianist Malcolm Bilson conducting a master class for the three winners. These talented high-school students were Elaine Kao, age 15, of Arcadia, performing the Waldstein Sonata, Opus 53 (first place); Bill John Newbrough, age 16, of Concord performing the Sonata in D Major, Opus 10, no. 3 (second); and Howard Kim, age 15, of Palos Verdes Estates performing the Sonata in B-flat Major, Opus 22 (third). That evening Bilson enchanted the audience with his performance of the Sonata in C-sharp Minor, Opus 27, no. 2 (Moonlight) and the Seven Bagatelles, Opus 33, played along with Haydn's Sonata in G Major, Hob. XVI:39 and Mozart's Sonata in C Major, K. 309. Part of the evening's recital was later broadcast by National Public Radio on their Performance Today program. Other festival events sponsored by the Center included a stimulating two-concert series (February 16 and April 6) of Beethoven's complete music for cello and performed by San Jose State University music faculty members Robert Sayre and John Delevoryas; an exquisite and energetic recital of music by Haydn, Clementi, Beethoven, and Mozart by Karen Swietlik (sponsored jointly with the Chamber Music Society on March 11); and an all-Beethoven concert by the magnificent Juilliard String Quartet on May 18 (performing the Quartets, Opus 18, no. 6; Opus 95; Opus 135). Before each of the San Jose Symphony's concerts of all nine symphonies, the Center arranged pre-concert lectures, which were presented in turn by Drs. Thomas Wendel (February 28), William George (March 21), Alfred Kanwischer (April 25), and William Meredith (May 23). Other lectures included an excellent iconographical lecture entitled Portraits of a genius given by Irma Brilliant (March 4); Dr. Owen Jander's thought-provoking and challenging study of Orpheus and the Fourth Concerto (April 17); and Dr. Richmond Browne's very creative study of Beethoven composing at the fortepiano (March 6). With the help of Dr. Charlene Archibeque, internationally acclaimed choral director at San Jose State, we also organized the quite successful First Ninth Sing-along (May 12), which attracted nearly 300 voices. Bay area music critic Paul Hertelendy was the guest speaker at the banquet following the sing-along. Many thanks to everyone involved for helping make the 1990 San Jose Festival a resounding success! After that hectic spring, we were ready to focus our attention on the more mundane but equally satisfying task of building the Center's collection. We were fortunate to receive advance offer of an extensive collection from music antiquarian dealer Lisa Cox in England. The collection contains 154 works, including twelve first editions. The remaining 142 editions are primarily English editions published during Beethoven's lifetime, several of which are not listed in the Kinsky-Halm thematic catalog. Some examples include a very early edition of the Sonata for Fortepiano, four hands, Opus 6 (ca. 1801; published by Bland & Wellers in London); an edition of the String Quartets, Opus 18, nos. …" @default.
