- W2918557688 abstract "Bridled nailtail wallabies are small, solitary wallabies that were once common in eastern Australia. Along with many other Australian mammals, their population crashed to near-extinction around 1 900. The main causes are thought to be grazing, clearing, and feral predators. There is now only one wild population, containing 400-500 animals. The aims of this study were to examine what influences survival, to plan conservation measures for this endangered wallaby and to interpret declines of the past. A comparison was made of shelter, food, predators, reproduction and survival rates of adults and young at two sites within the reserve with different types of forest, under both drought and average rainfall conditions. Through trapping, marking, spotlighting, radio-tracking and by providing experimental shelter for wallabies, some important influences on survival have been discovered. Young become independent while very small, and are frequently left alone by their mothers. Females can reproduce very fast, but this strategy makes the young vulnerable. Feral cats prey heavily on young wallabies where ground cover is sparse. Adults fall prey to dingoes, and also need dense cover in which to shelter. Because breeding is fast and all young disperse to new areas, the population has the potential to recover, given effective predator control and access to suitable shelter." @default.
