- W2919640753 abstract "Neuroimaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have clarified our understanding of multilingual speech and its neural underpinnings. Multilingual studies provide insight about how language representation differs when managing languages of different strengths or that were acquired at different times and in different ways. Language switching provides a means to unravel control mechanisms engaged for languages of differing strengths. A deficit in the bilingual literature is that it is difficult to dissociate effects of language acquisition order and proficiency. By manipulating age of acquisition (AOA), researchers have corroborated the proposal that learning two languages early in life affects the development of control and articulatory networks. By manipulating proficiency, multilingual studies have verified a role for the caudate in switching and implied a role for the putamen in controlling articulatory demands in a weaker language. There is evidence that years of exerting language control builds cognitive reserve, which protects against age-related or pathological neurodegeneration." @default.
