This small book is an entry-level discussion of a specific aspect of Pauline thought, wisely limited almost exclusively to the seven undisputed letters. Even so, Hartin has to cover a considerable amount of introductory material in the briefest fashion, and I believe that he has done this part quite well. He defines “spirituality” as the integration of one’s life in self-transcendence following the model of Jesus Christ (p. 2), and so clearly identifies the scope of the book. [End Page 142] In the introduction, H. lays out the contents of his study, chapter by chapter. He promises to describe (part 1, chap. 1) Paul’s own spiritual encounter of the risen Lord in his call “in the context of Paul’s own world and the spiritual tradition of Israel” (p. 5). By reflecting on some insights of Gustavo Gutiérrez in part 2, H. presents Paul’s spiritual vision as a prolongation of Paul’s own call to internalize the cross and resurrection (chap. 2). Chapters 3–7 continue the discussion with descriptions of Paul’s own transformation by grace, believers’ covenantal relationship with God in faith, personal renewal in terms of the anthropology of salvation, community orientation in the body of Christ in the Spirit, and the eschatological goal of the spiritual life. In a final chapter, H. speaks to “Paul’s Spirituality for Today” (part 3, chap. 8), presenting “some Christian witnesses, whose lives demonstrate aspects of Paul’s spirituality” (p. 5). The cardinal insight of the book is that Pauline spirituality has a vertical and a horizontal aspect: it is integration that is self-transcending based on a personal experience with Christ gifted by God. This immediately includes a corporate identity with one’s fellow believers who make up the body of Christ. Not much space is devoted to the very difficult question of exactly what a personal relationship with Christ encompasses, but H. is very helpful on where one experiences Christ: in reading and meditation on Scripture, in the sacraments, in one’s daily encounter with people, because of Christ dwelling in individuals (p. 24). I wish H. had said more about this last point because Paul usually speaks about the Spirit dwelling in us with the contrasting image that it is our life that is “in Christ.” I found the book a bit repetitive, even more than its elementary approach might require, especially on the importance of grace. H. becomes a bit cloudy in chap. 6 when he concentrates more on Acts than on the Letters to explain Paul’s understanding of Spirit, or when he overstates, “Now, for Paul, God’s Spirit is a real person responsible for the new life the believer now leads” (p. 76; my emphasis), or when he reaches the not quite Pauline conclusion that it is the Spirit that bonds believers to the risen Christ in the Eucharist (p. 82). The final chapter seems almost a digression that expends too much space (yet too little to do justice) on four more modern figures who each exemplify one of Hartin’s “four foundational pillars” for Pauline spirituality today. This is a really fine beginner’s guide written by a teacher who knows how the personal reality of Christian spirituality actually works. He has laid out well and in approachable clarity Paul’s basic insights on the centrality of the cross and resurrection as God’s transforming grace in Christ, the importance of faith, and its generous response in service to community in the Body of Christ.
