- W2920120291 abstract "After a brief introduction into the history of cell membrane research - having led to an enormously detailed knowledge on biomembranes today and to an increasing number of efforts to reconstitute artificial living cells - this review will focus on the biomembrane's lipid matrix with a strong focus on small angle scattering-based work. In particular, this review will outline how structural membrane modeling has helped to advance our understanding of the lipid bilayer architecture under different environmental conditions. Starting with the pioneering work of Luzzati introducing the simplest approach of determining bilayer thickness at the swelling limit, fundamental bilayer strip-model investigations of Levine and others in the sixties as well as more refined bilayer modeling applying Gaussian distributions representing different bilayer molecular fragments are discussed. Finally to the beginning of this millennium, combining structure and form factor modeling of bilayers allowed to deduce nanostructural and mechanical properties of the bilayer at the same time. Contemporary research has moreover concentrated on curved bilayer systems as given in bicontinuous cubic lipid self-assemblies and on biologically highly-relevant asymmetric bilayer systems. Finally, in the last section I will highlight new insights in the nanostructural nature of molten triacylglycerols." @default.
