- W2920990160 abstract "Introduction: Background: Cigarette smoking is a well-established risk factor for inflammatory bowel disease, but its role as a risk factor for microscopic colitis is less clearly defined. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis summarizing all existing evidence to better characterize the association between current and past cigarette smoking and microscopic colitis compared to never smoking. Methods: MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were searched to May 2018 for studies that investigated the association between smoking and microscopic colitis. Odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled using random-effects models. Tests for heterogeneity, subgroup analyses, sensitivity analysis, and publication bias were performed. Results: Analyses were based on 262,312 subjects from 7 independent studies. Compare to never smokers, the pooled OR was 2.99 (95%CI 2.15-4.15) for current smokers and 1.63 (95%CI 1.37-1.94) for former smokers (Figure 1 and 2). The increased likelihood of microscopic colitis appeared to be consistent across strata of different study designs and subtypes of microscopic colitis. The plots were symmetric and did not provide suggestive evidence of publication bias for both analyses (current vs never smokers and former vs never smokers) (Figure 3).201_A Figure 1.
