- W292215449 abstract "Cinematic trends in the 1970s included a little-noticed blending of new wave social commentary and expanding sexual explicitness that produced transgressive ventures into then taboo topics and images of sexuality and sexual violence. What emerged was the hybrid genre of 'the rape-revenge film', spawning decades of debate as to whether such films, as artistic expression, were a more contemporary and relevant form of social commentary or merely exploitive, feeding on society’s insidious and endemic appetite for sexuality and violence that, even more disturbingly, might precipitate more widespread sexual promiscuity and/or sexual violence. This paper explores the international development of the film genre, beginning with Ingmar Bergman’s classic “The Virgin Spring” (1959) and continuing through a representative range of moralistic and violent films in American and Japanese film over the subsequent forty years. Of critical importance during this period has been the degree to which filmmakers have progressively adapted the genre to the changing legal structures (and specifically obscenity laws) within which they operate, a dynamic that is analyzed in some detail using Takashi Ishii’s “Freeze Me” (Japan 2000) as a case study." @default.
