- W2922278725 abstract "Introduction: Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) is the 2nd leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide and the 6th most frequent neoplasm. Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) has been shown to lead to the development of HCC even in the absence of cirrhosis. California's Central Valley has a large Hispanic population that is predisposed to the development of NASH due to the higher incidence of a polymorphism in the Patatin-Like Phosphate Domain-Containing Protein 3 (PNPLA3) in addition to lower socioeconomic status leading to poor dietary choices, increased risk of obesity and limited access to care. Therefore, understanding the association between genetic, social and clinical influences and the onset of liver disease and HCC from NASH is crucial in mitigating the predicted disease burden of HCC in the Central Valley through early intervention and treatment. Methods: The study was conducted as a retrospective chart review of patients at three separate medical facilities in the Central Valley. Potential subjects were identified based on the cancer registries' records. The diagnosis of HCC was established by either histopathology or typical appearance of HCC on crosssectional imaging studies. Age, sex, ethnicity, body mass index (BMI), presence of metabolic syndrome risk factors, and etiology of liver disease were collected. Results: 247 patients with HCC were enrolled in this study spanning a 10-year period from 2008- 2017. Twenty-one percent of the patients were female, age ranging from 22 to 95, with a mean of 61 years (standard deviation 9.9). Twenty-five percent of patients had alcoholic liver disease, seventeen percent had diabetes, thirty-six percent were overweight (BMI 25 - 30), and twenty-six percent were obese (BMI >30). Fifty-five percent of the patients were of Hispanic descent. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that metabolic syndrome is a strong risk factor for development of HCC in our predominantly Hispanic population. Efforts should be made to identify patients at risk for development of NASH and implement risk factor modification programs to prevent development of HCC in this genetically vulnerable population." @default.
