- W2923975398 abstract "Students of any subject in a university are generally required to produce some writings during their study. The students have to consider the cohesion and coherence of their writing. This study aims to identify the occurrences of cohesive devices in academic papers, including the frequency, and to examine the influence of inappropriate uses of cohesive devices on coherence. It uses types of cohesion proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976) to explore the use of cohesive devices and the theory on micro and macro coherence proposed by van Dijk (1997) to examine the coherence. It is qualitative research since it is descriptive: describing the use of cohesive devices and the influence of inappropriate uses of cohesive devices on coherence. The data of this study was introduction sections of 32 academic papers produced for Academic Writing and Presentation (AWP) course which was held in the odd semester in 2009/2010. This study produces several main findings. First, all types of cohesive devices occur, of which the order from the most to the least used is as follows: reiteration, reference, conjunction, collocation, ellipsis, and substitution. Second, lexical cohesive devices are more dominant than grammatical cohesive devices because much elaboration of ideas in expository writing generally depends heavily on the effective use of various lexical devices. Third, of reiteration, repetition is the most used, which suggests the main topic and may indicate students’ limited vocabulary. Fourth, few cohesive devices are used inappropriately, but they do not make the introduction sections incoherent." @default.
