- W2924432937 abstract "The preexisting underlying paleotopography directly influences the loess deposition process and shapes the morphology of current loess landforms. However, such a controlling effect exhibits spatial variations and uncertainty depending on the data sources, methodologies, and scopes employed in research. Based on the dual-layer terrain models of the modern terrain and the underlying paleotopography, this chapter introduces a watershed hierarchy method for examining the spatial variations in the loess landform inheritance relationship and examining the loess deposition process across different scales of drainages. These landform inheritance relationships were characterized by using terrain-relief change index (TRCI), bedrock terrain controllability index (BTCI), and landform developmental stage change index (LDSCI). The inhomogeneous and non-flat paleotopography in a depositional landform area profoundly controls the evolution of modern gullies and shapes the structure of the gully network. The underlying paleotopography of the loess was considered while evaluating its controlling effects on the gully evolutionary process. A comparative analysis was also conducted by using geophysical prospecting, detailed geological information, and high-resolution DEM to understand the modern gully evolution in relation to paleotopography." @default.
