Resonant sensors that are operated in its mechanical resonance frequency are a subject of particular practical interest because their output – the resonance frequency – is a quasi-digital signal. Piezoelectric transducers are used as electromechanical resonators. Quartz resonator sensors are well known from their use as time bases for frequency control. The chapter summarizes properties of commercially available quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) quartz crystals. Surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors, such as QCM sensors, are devices that are based on high-frequency mechanical oscillators. In general, all presented sensors use carbon dioxide (CO2)-sensitive coatings on the delay line of the SAW. The chapter shows the basic set-up of an ultrasonic gas sensor utilizing the different velocities of speed of different gases to determine the concentration of a particular constituent in binary gas mixtures." @default.
