- W2927836050 abstract "Abstract Composites are being developed at a prolific pace to meet the needs of medical industry and impart easier application in biomedical engineering. Many years’ worth of cumulative research has been conducted on the usage of resorbable polymer fibers, particularly polylactide and its copolymers with polyglycolide, collagen, silk, biocellulose for development of composite materials. The resorbable polymer fiber reinforced composites are widely utilized in medical industry for bone defect repair, spinal implants, dental applications, replacement of ligament and tendons, hip joint prostheses, tissue engineered scaffolds, and drug delivery. Recently there has been growing interest in biocomposites, which are composite materials formed by a matrix and a reinforcement of natural fibers. These materials are biocompatible, tend to mimic the living material in terms of structure, and able to maintain the strength of matrix. Biocomposite materials based on resorbable polymer matrix can be used as biomaterials for biomedical applications. This chapter is organized into separate sections: defining the concept of composites and biocomposites; use of biodegradable resorbable polymers for the formation of bioresorbable composites by combining with different reinforcing elements; their fabrication and mechanisms behind these modifications; characterization of composites; and biomedical applications especially in context of bone tissue repair, including recent advances and future prospects." @default.
