- W2927887415 abstract "Optical mapping of voltage (Vm or action potentials) and intracellular calcium (Cai or calcium transients) has made a major impact on our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the initiation and maintenance of drug-induced long QT type 2 arrhythmias. This chapter presents evidence that abnormal intracellular calcium handling is a necessary step on the way to arrhythmia in long QT syndrome. Adult women have longer corrected QT intervals than adult men and also have a higher propensity to torsades de pointes (TdP). These gender differences in ventricular repolarization appear with puberty. The role of sex hormones has been proven in animal models. However, the gender differences in the duration of ventricular repolarization cannot fully explain the difference in tendency toward TdP. For example, in the rabbit, sexually immature females have longer repolarization than immature males, but prepubertal male hearts are more prone to TdP than hearts from prepubertal females during IKr blocker perfusion." @default.
