- W292855507 abstract "Focused assessment with sonography in trauma, commonly referred to as the FAST exam, aims to identify free fluid in the peritoneal cavity and/or pericardial space in the setting of trauma. Additionally, expanded FAST, or eFAST exam, includes additional views above the diaphragm in an effort to identify the presence of hemo- or pneumothorax. In the following chapter, we will examine the use of ultrasound in the setting of trauma critical care, both in the initial patient evaluation in the trauma bay as well as in the intensive care unit setting. We will illustrate and discuss both normal and abnormal ultrasound images of the abdomen, heart, and lung, discuss standard techniques of image acquisition as well as pitfalls and precautions, and touch briefly on evolving uses of ultrasound in trauma, such as identification of diaphragmatic rupture. Finally, we will illustrate a sample clinical protocol for integrating the FAST and eFAST exams into the management of the trauma and critical care patient." @default.
