- W29300564 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses women's health in midlife. This chapter provides a review of women's health at midlife with a primary focus on menopause and the long-term changes following menopause. It is apparent from this review that the physiological and hormonal changes associated with menopause do not affect all women the same and that women differ in how they respond to this physiological event. Factors that influence a woman's response appear to be cultural, behavioral, psychosocial, as well as physiological. There is also evidence that women who experience a more difficult time during menstruation have a more difficult menopause. In fact, following menopause, many women experience a new period of developmental growth and increased energy. And finally, future research needs to study this life transition among women of diverse ethnic groups, determine long-term health changes that are directly attributable to menopause versus those attributable to aging, and better understand the risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy and its alternatives." @default.
