- W293087621 abstract "In kittens in which rotation of the visual field was performed, behavioral changes and changes in receptive field orientations for cells in the primary visual cortex were found. These changes reflect the conflict existing in these kittens between the vestibular and the visual input to the visual cortex with regard to the orientation of the body in space. To answer the question on the conflict with the vestibular or other sensory input, the factor of binocularity has to be eliminated unless equal binocular rotation of the visual field is performed. This chapter discusses a study in which this has been by using a group of monocular kittens developed with the seeing eye rotated. In the earlier studies on the effect of unilateral eye rotation on binocular cortical cells in kittens, a large range of angular disparities was found. To correct for the disparity artificially induced, a compensatory mechanism was suggested. The existence of such a mechanism was shown for prism-induced disparity of small angles in kittens. In the study, the effect of disparities of large angles as well as small ones was investigated. However, because of the fact that few cells with clear orientation selectivity remained binocularly active under these conditions, there was a need for a large number of cells to be recorded from; such a quantitative approach was adapted for the study." @default.
