- W293329484 abstract "Tales from Kentucky Funeral Homes. By William Lynwood Montell. (Lexington: The University Press of Kentucky, 2009. Pp. 198. Introduction, biographies of storytellers. $24.95 cloth.)Continuing his recent interest in narratives originating from specific occupational folk groups, Lynwood Montell's Tales from Kentucky Funeral Homes (TKFH) is a collection of stories told by funeral home directors from Montell's home state of Kentucky. Fearful of permanent loss of traditional folkways, especially in occupations such as funeral home direction that rely heavily on oral transmission as its primary method of instruction, Montell hopes that collections like TKFH may serve as invaluable safeguards. Not only that, but he wants to give voice to the 99.9 percent of world's population whose names never get into history books (2). His method for collecting and presenting these tales remains true to that intention. To gather his texts, Montell visited and interviewed funeral home directors asking about their backgrounds and for specific incidents from their careers that stood out to them. The answers to these types of questions led to his chapter topics: funeral and burial practices and customs, humorous incidents, personal narratives related to business, family-run funeral homes, and encounters with bereaved. Montell's approach to his topic and his informants is honest and straightforward; by placing focus on individual rather than complicated theory, he reinforces notion that it is people that are instrumental to understanding folklore. The value he places on voices of his informants is further demonstrated by sheer number of pages dedicated to their words. Comparatively, Montell is relatively absent from book, apart from basic introductions; he leaves analysis up to his informants and readers.Though focus is on Kentucky funeral homes, Montell's true motivation for writing TKFH is to promote preservation of American traditions and beliefs. By collecting information on vanishing ways of life, TKFH is ultimately an example of salvage ethnography. For example, Montell emphasizes how funerals were once conducted in homes of deceased rather than in funeral homes. Also, besides being funeral directors, their jobs included furniture and casket making and ambulance driving. Even smallest changes were brought up by many of funeral directors, such as replacing term coffin with casket. Although a seemingly minor alteration, changes like these speak to shifting attitudes towards death in United States by demonstrating a need to soften its reality. …" @default.
