- W2933753734 abstract "Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a natural biopolymer produced by different microbial genera and a cell-free system. It has received immense consideration in the recent years owing to its unique structural, physicochemical, mechanical, and biological features, which allow its use in different fields such as biomedical, food, industry, and cosmetics. However, its wide range applications have been limited by its high production cost. Therefore, extensive efforts have been devoted to obtaining high yields at low cost by developing new BC production strategies, use of additives for high-yield BC, and exploration of cheap raw materials to be used as BC production media. This chapter describes the BC production pathway and overviews its biochemical and molecular regulation and exciting features. Various cultivation techniques for BC production with different shapes, sizes, quantity, quality, and physico-mechanical properties for various applications are described. It further describes the effect of different additives on high yield and structural features of BC. Finally, it explores the potential of different industrial wastes as BC production media. Although this chapter provides the fundamentals of BC research for novice readers and experts, further advancement in synthesis strategies and low-cost and improved productivity is always the aim of researchers for industrialization." @default.
