- W293490710 abstract "Abstract The midbrain dopaminergic systems and their associated pathways are sensitive to circulating adrenal steroids and estrogens. Adrenal steroids exert modulatory effects on striatal neurons, suppressing at least one type of stereotyped behavior and facilitating certain aspects of motor activity in the rat, as well as producing “steroid psychosis” in some human subjects. Adrenal steroid Type II receptors are present in these brain areas, along with some Type I receptors. In rats, adrenalectomy and corticosterone replacement affect neuropeptide gene expression (enkephalin, tachykinin, cholecystokinin), and there are also indications of direct or indirect glucocorticoid effects on D1 and D2 receptor sensitivity and on DA turnover, although there is no information as to mechanisms by which these effects occur. Estradiol also affects the midbrain dopaminergic system, but its actions are complex, both time and dose dependent. Estrogen actions can be very rapid and occur in the absence of detectable intracellular estrogen receptors. Local membrane effects are strongly suggested, with differential actions of estradiol involving subsets of dopaminergic neurons." @default.
