Cholesterol je z bunÄk odstraĹovĂĄn aktivnÄ pĹedevĹĄĂm prostĹednictvĂm membrĂĄnovĂ˝ch proteinĹŻ oznaÄovanĂ˝ch ABCA1 (ATP-binding casette transporter A1) nebo ABCG1 a ABCG4 (ATP-binding casette transporter G1 a G4), dalĹĄĂ cholesterol mĹŻĹže opustit buĹky pomocĂ SR-BI (scavenger receptor class B type I) Äi difuzĂ.
