- W2936953014 abstract "Few observers can deny the serious problems of the contemporary family. Foremost among these is probably the reluctance of family patrons, critics, and “clinicians” to consider alternative solutions different from their own. An attempt is made to identify some basic problems such as the very viability of the family, the nature of marriage, and the “generation gap.” Alternative solutions drawn from the classical family system of Islam are presented. Thought provoking and diffusion of ideas are contemplated. More importantly, a common viable alternative may be introduced to the perplexed modern society and at the same time rediscovered by Muslim society. The family in Islam rests upon blood ties and/or marriage. Members are bound together in a web of reciprocal relationships oriented, ultimately, to God. Every member is assured of his rights to life, support, dignity, and care; but equitable reciprocity is imperative. Marriage is both a contract and a sacrament, a commitment and a fulfillment. Conditional polygyny is permissible. So is divorce as the very last resort. It may be initiated unilaterally or bilaterally. But reconciliation even after divorce is highly commendable. Relatives inherit one another in proportion to their responsibility for, and natural closeness to, one another.; The whole system is based on compassion and equity, entrusted to individual conscientiousness and societal care, and reinforced by divine involvement." @default.
