- W2937076841 abstract "Autoimmune blistering skin disorders (AIBD) are chronic, debilitating conditions which affect the skin and mucous membranes. Food intolerances have been studied in inflammatory conditions including inflammatory bowel disease, asthma, and cardiovascular disease. Multiple studies have established nutrients’ ability to alter the microbiota, influence the innate immune system, and modulate inflammation. We sought to assess the role of various food groups in AIBDs. Two hundred patients were surveyed through the International Pemphigus and Pemphigoid Foundation e-mail listserv. 56.1% had a diagnosis of pemphigus vulgaris, 16.2% bullous pemphigoid, 20.2% mucous membrane pemphigoid. 62.5% avoided particular foods because of their AIBD, a percentage higher than that reported in the general population (15%). 54.5% had worsening of their oral symptoms with certain food types. 48.6% observed that specific foods resulted in disease flares. A χ2test was used to compare food intolerances in the general population and our cohort. Statistical significance was considered for P <0.019, based on a Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons. Alcohol, citrus, and spicy foods were avoided at a higher rate than the overall incidence of food avoidance in the general population. Interestingly, greater than 10% of patients found that vegetables and dairy products had a beneficial effect on their AIBD symptoms. Given the higher prevalence of food intolerances, there may be a role for food-avoidance diets in the management of these patients. Avoidance of alcohol, citrus, and spicy foods may help alleviate oral symptoms and prevent disease flares, while consumption of vegetables and dairy may promote healing of mucosal lesions. Prospective studies are warranted to clarify the role of various foods in disease management." @default.
