• W2937803583 abstract "Cytokine interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) is one of the important proteins in chronic inflammatory diseases such as periodontal disease. The secretion of IFN-γ is affected by the single nucleotide polymorphism of +874A/T in human IFN-γ gene and may lead to susceptibility to periodontal disease. There are limited studies about polymorphism of IFN-γ and periodontitis and the finding of published studies were inconsistent. The aim of this study is to summarize the finding literature about the association between IFN-γ +874 A/T polymorphism and periodontal disease. PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct and Google Scholar were investigated for eligible studies using relevant MeSH terms. Articles search was performed in English about the last ten years up until May 2018. The inclusion criteria were clinical studies focusing on the IFN-γ +874A/T polymorphism and susceptibility to periodontal disease from systematically healthy subjects, with the keyword: periodontitis OR periodontal disease AND interferon-gamma OR IFNG OR IFN-γ OR interferon-γ OR IFN-gamma AND polymorphism. The exclusion criteria were not case-control studies such as reviews, letters, case reports or comments, and duplicate publications. Eight studies met the inclusion criteria. Two studies both from the Asian population showed significant relation between IFN-γ +874 A/T polymorphism and periodontitis while six studies showed no association between them. There was not enough proof to indicate the connection between IFN-γ +874A/T polymorphism and periodontal disease severity, however, because of the limitation of this review, more comprehensive study of IFN-γ +874A/T polymorphism and periodontitis is still needed." @default.
