- W2937892822 abstract "A warm cup of coffee next to one's laptop, late in the evening. The marked-up draft with treasured comments from a mentor or colleague. The pride that swells when your name—or even better, your resident's name—graces the lead article in this month's JVS. The reasons that surgeons find writing to be rewarding vary broadly. Whether they are in academic practice, community practice, or somewhere in between, nearly every practicing vascular surgeon has likely written a paper at some point. The length and rigor of surgical training nearly guarantee that we all were involved in the development, writing, and publication of a manuscript. Perhaps this was a highly cited paper in a broadly read journal, or perhaps this was a report outlining an interesting case to a local community of physicians. Either way, most vascular surgeons have likely published at one point or another. What is “rewarding” about writing? For many, writing about surgery is a quiet solace and an invaluable way to communicate our interests and findings to our colleagues. In this manuscript, Drs Cheng and colleagues carefully calculated the academic rewards associated with writing and determined how many papers vascular surgeons have published at the assistant professor, associate professor, and professor level.1Cheng T.W. Farber A. Rajani R.R. Jones D.W. Flynn D. Rybin D. et al.National criteria for academic appointment in vascular surgery.J Vasc Surg. 2018; Google Scholar They found that on average, assistant professors had written approximately 15 papers, whereas professors have written nearly 6 times that number. Promotion was heavily associated with academic productivity, and promotion to the highest level was associated with productivity and highly cited publications. Proudly, when the authors compared the academic productivity of vascular surgeons to other surgeons, we rank highly in terms of numbers and impact of our published works. These benchmarks, described in a well-written manuscript and nicely illustrated using scatterplots and correlation coefficients, make an elegant argument about why writing is an important and necessary skill set for the modern vascular surgeon. Writing a manuscript is a slow and sometimes painful process. Disruptive innovation from social media has made this process even more complex. Visual abstracts, tweets, videos, and infographics have shifted the ways by which physicians communicate their findings.2Luc J.G. Stamp N.L. Antonoff M.B. In future years, will our promotion tracks consider how many social media followers we have? Can't I just look at the on-line video of the procedure rather than reading about it? These questions are empirical, and time will tell as future generations continue to revise our measures of success and career maturity. Even with these changes, vascular surgeons aiming to succeed in academic practice can be sure that well-written, thoughtful analyses and clearly displayed findings are a certain recipe for academic success. So, write early and often. Just like in vascular surgery, practice makes perfect. Our objectives were to characterize academic appointments in vascular surgery and to investigate what factors, particularly publications, influenced academic appointment.
