While soft-shell capsules typically contain liquids, such as oils, hard-shell capsules are usually used to deliver powders or granules to patients. Hard-shell capsules consist of two halves: a lower-diameter body that is filled and a higher-diameter cap to subsequently seal it. This chapter focuses on the dosator nozzle filling process. Modeling the powder used in the dosator process is as important as modeling the process. The chapter presents a case study in which a dosator filling process is designed to achieve appropriate powder plug strengths for various powder properties. The dosator filling process is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry to fill powders into hard capsules.
