- W2938704072 abstract "Abstract Human corporeality presents a problem to a species that is psychologically inclined to deny death; for it poses the potential to remind humans that they are animals, and just like any living creature, they too will ultimately be met with the same inescapable ending. In this chapter, we present research depicting the problematic relationships that people have with their bodies and sex, and demonstrate that existential concerns underlie these difficulties. Women’s bodies, because of their explicit connection to the reproduction of the species (e.g., pregnancy), are deemed especially problematic, and the objectification of women is construed as a symbolic solution to this problem. This framework also lends itself to understanding potential health risks (e.g., avoidance of cancer screening) resulting from the motivation to deny human corporeality. After presenting the research on these topics, we briefly consider whether there is an alternative approach to terror management, whereby people can embrace their corporeality without defensiveness." @default.
