- W2939307521 abstract "Objectives Since its release in 2011, the FIGO classification (PALM-COEIN) has been used internationally to classify women with abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB). As it can applied pre-operatively, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility of PALM-COEIN in predicting anemia or transfusion in women with AUB. Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted in women who underwent gynecological surgery at an academic hospital between April 1st, 2016 and March 31st, 2017. Of 998 patients, 320 were identified as having AUB. Medical records were reviewed for FIGO classifications and relevant outcomes. Pearson Chi-Square, Levene's test and t-test for equality of means were performed using SPSS. Results The overall mean hemoglobin for women with AUB was 124.4±16.50g/L(n=320), and 121.45±18.8g/L for submucosal leiomyoma(n=65), 126.92±14.9g/L for non-submucosal leiomyoma(n=159), 127±13.8g/L for adenomyosis(n=42), 123±13.7g/L for proliferative endometrial causes (polyp, malignancy/hyperplasia; n=34), 112.9±18.2g/L for systemic conditions (coagulopathy, ovulatory dysfunction, iatrogenic; n=16) and 137.1±6.4g/L for not yet classified(n=4). Overall rates of preoperative anemia and transfusion were 23.1% and 10.6% respectively. Anemia and transfusion rateswere also determined for submucosal leiomyoma (32.2%,10.7%), non-submucosal leiomyoma (16.9%, 8.2%), adenomyosis (19.5%, 14.7%), proliferative endometrial causes (6.1%, 14.7%), systemic conditions (43.8%,18.8%), and not yet classified (0%,0%). Non-submucosal leiomyoma, proliferative endometrial causes and systemic causes of AUB were all associated with significantly less pre-operative anemia (p Conclusions Women with AUB appear to be at considerable risk of preoperative anemia requiring transfusion at the time of surgery, with specific categories associated with elevated risk." @default.
