- W294041202 abstract "This chapter discusses Golgi complex and secretory granules. In ultrathin sections, the Golgi complex presents itself as stacks of flattened sacs or saccules and associated vacuoles and vesicles. The functions of the Golgi complex are many and varied. Its involvement in secretory processes had long been suspected by light microscopists because of the prominence of this organelle in such cells and the presence of secretory droplets in the Golgi region. The Golgi complex is composed of three basic elements, the most characteristic part being a stack of flattened sacs the ends of which are often slightly dilated. The stack of sacs is occasionally straight but is slightly or markedly curved on most occasions. On the convex or outer face of the stack lie numerous vesicles. These vesicles arise by a process of budding from the endoplasmic reticulum. They not only bring with them products made in this organelle for processing and packing in the Golgi complex but also add to the pool of Golgi complex membranes. Secretory granules of various endocrine and exocrine cells show many variations in size and fine structure, which among other things reflect the chemical composition of the secretory product they contain. The secretory granules produced by acinar cells in serous salivary glands and mixed salivary glands are called acinar granules or serous granules. Those produced by the acinar cells of the exocrine pancreas are called zymogen granules. The marked hypertrophy of the Golgi complexes seen in some tumors is also not particularly surprising because excessive production of secretory materials is, at times, a feature of some tumors." @default.
