• W2941117982 abstract "Being a foreign language, English is not spoken by most of Indonesian people in their daily activities. However, it is present in all of formal education levels as an obligatory or even as a local content subject. As this is mostly present in classroom context, most of students do not have opportunities to practice their target language outside the classroom particularly for exploring their speaking proficiency for communicative purposes. This limited target language exposure probably results low speaking proficiency students. In addition, the learning and teaching activities in the classroom tends to focus on learning the rules of the target language, rather than using the target language for communicative purposes which in turn lead the teacher and the learning materials provided in the classroom as the only sources of learning and teaching activities. This study aims at finding out the effectiveness of a contemporary ELT method i.e., Task-Based Learning with English Conversation Gambits as its language focus material in improving students’ speaking proficiency. Besides, it also investigated the students’ attitudes toward the method implementation in terms of behavioral, cognitive, and emotional aspects of attitude. It was carried out at a State Senior High School in Bandung Regency. For the aim of the study, both quantitative and qualitative instruments were employed. From the quantitative data analyses of pretest and posttest in finding out the effectiveness of the method implementation, it was found that the sig. (2- tailed) value in the t-test is .001 is smaller than .05, so, the null hypothesis was rejected. This means that there was difference speaking proficiency between the experimental and the control classes. The findings showed that the method improved students’ speaking proficiency by optimizing the use of English Conversation Gambits during language focus phase in the framework. The method implementation generated the students to use the target language to accomplish the task which in turn improved their speaking proficiency. It facilitated student to experience and exploring the target language use through the task completion. Moreover, English Conversation Gambits material served to simplify and naturalize the students’ language expressions. Meanwhile, from qualitative data analyses of classroom observations, questionnaire, and interviews, the study indicated that most of the students under investigation revealed positive attitudes toward the method implementation. Even though some challenges and limitations were identified, the method implementation was found beneficial in facilitating students’ communicative competence of the target language in large class with mixed-proficiency. To see more comprehensive effect of the method, the similar study is recommended to do to see the difficulties students encountered in Task-Based Learning implementation.----- Sebagai bahasa asing, bahasa Inggris tidak digunakan oleh kebanyakan penduduk Indonesia di dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Tetapi, kita bias menemukan bahasa Inggris pada semua tingkatan pendidikan formal baik sebagai mata pelajaran wajib Maupun sebagai muatan lokal. Ketika bahasa Inggris hanya ditemukan di dalam konteks di kelas, kebanyakan siswa tidak mempunyai kesempatan untuk mempraktekan bahasa Inggris di luar kelas terutama untuk mengeksplorasi keahlian bahasa Inggris mereka untuk tujuan berkomunikasi. Keterbatasan dalam pengungkapan bahasa Inggris inilah yang mungkin menyebabkan rendahnya keahlian berbicara bahasa Inggris dari siswa. Disamping itu, kegiatan belajar dan mengajar di dalam kelas cenderung berpusat pada pembelajaran tata bahasa bahasa Inggris daripada menggunakan bahasa Inggris untuk tujuan berkominikasi yang pada akhirnya membuat guru dan materi pembelajaran yang tersedia di kelas sebagai satu-satunya sumber kegiatan belajar dan mengajar. Tesis ini bertujuan untuk menemukan efektifitas dari penerapan metodologi Task-Based Learning yakni sebuah metodologi modern di dalam metodologi pengajaran bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan English Conversation Gambits sebagai materi pada tahapan Language focus di dalam meningkatkan keahlian berbahasa Inggris siswa. Selan itu, Tesis ini juga bermaksud untuk menyelidiki sikap siswa terhadap penerapan metodologi pada aspek sikap, kognitif dan emosi. Studi ini dilaksanakan di sebuah sekolah menengah atas negeri di Kabupaten Bandung. Studi ini menggunakan instrumen kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Dari hasil analisis data kuantitatif prites dan postes di dalam menemukan efektifitas dari penerapan metodologi ini, ditemukan bahwa nilai signifikan (2- tailed) pada t-test adalah .001 lebih kecil daripada.05, sehingga null hypothesis dibuang. Hal ini berarti bahwa terdapat perbedaan keahlian berbicara bahasa Inggris diantara kelas kontrol dan kelas percobaan. Temuan ini menunjukan bahwa penerapan metodologi ini meningkatkan keahlian berbicara siswa dengan mengoptimalkan penggunaan materi English Conversation Gambits pada tahapan language fokus. Penerapan metodologi ini membuat siswa menggunakan bahasa Inggris untuk menyelesaikan tugas yang pada glirannya meningkatkan keahliah berbicara mereka, memfasilitasi siswa untuk mengalami dan mengeksplorasi penggunaan bahasa Inggris melalui penyelesaian tugas. Selain itu, materi English Conversation Gambits membantu menyederhanakan dan menaturalisasi ungkapn bahasa dari siswa. Semenara itu, dari hasil analisis data observasi kelas, angket, dan wawancara, ditemukan bahwa siswa menunjukan sikap yang positif terhadap penerapan metodologi ini. Meskipun ditemukan banyak kesulitan dan keterbatasan, penerapan metodologi ini terbukti bermanfaat di dalam memfasilitasi kompetensi berkomunikasi siswa di dalam berbahasa Inggris pada kelas yang padat dengan tingkat kompetensi yang beragam. Untuk menemukan hasil yang lebih komprehensif dari penerapan metodologi ini, saya merekomendasikan untuk dilakukan penelitan pada bidang yang sama untuk melihat kesulitan-kesulitan siswa ketika belajar dengan menggunakan metodologi Task-Based Learning ini" @default.
