- W2941571207 abstract "With introduction of internet super highway and increased demand for broadband datatransmission, there is an ever-increasing need for high performance and reliability, low costand small form factor components to serve metropolitan and local area networking. Thesecomponents include couplers, splitters, tunable lasers and optical amplifiers. The objectiveof this proposal is meet these demand by development and producing these componentsusing the sol-gel process, which is well known to be a low temperature and cost effectiveprocess. Phosphate glasses have been widely investigated for sol gel preparation ofintegrated wave-guides. Adding rare earth materials can easily control its refractive index.Thus planar wave-guides can be prepared with high concentration of rare earth withoutrunning into crystallization and clustering problems, encountered in other glass systems.This makes it possible to fabricate small components with high gain in thetelecommunication wavelength bands. Erbium /Ytterbium in phosphate may prove to be anideal system to provide the highest optical gain. In this proposal we will use this system todevelop high efficiency optical amplifier and other passive components using our expertisein sol-gel processing, rare earth structural characterization, semiconductor processing andinstrumentation. Silica – phosphate glasses planar waveguides activated by 0.4 mol % Er3+ions were prepared by sol –gel route, using spin-coating technique. XRD and transmissionelectron microscopy has shown that after an adapted heat treatment, the resulting materialsshow nanocrystalline structures. The silica - phosphate waveguides were characterized byphotoluminescence spectroscopy. Photoluminescence spectroscopy has demonstrated theembedding of erbium ions in the nanocrystals. The results are discussed with the aim ofassessing the role of phosphate on the structural, optical and spectroscopic properties oferbium doped silica – phosphate glasses planar waveguides. The optical absorptioncoefficient and refractive index of the thin film samples will be calculates fromtransmission and reflection spectra as a function of photon energy." @default.
