- W2943023919 abstract "This study aims to determine the meanings contained in the emoticons used in communicating media of WhatsApp. Interpersonal communication process among students of communication science program occures in WhatsApp. In WhatsApp application there are emoticons used by the sender of the message to represent the perceived emotion when sending messages. This research belongs to a qualitative research applying Charles Sanders Pierce semiotic analysis which is useful to see the meaning contained in emoticons. Data collection technique is done through documentation study by collecting Screenshoot chatting activity of Communication Students who are studying in Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta in academic year of 2013. Data analysis techniques used are data presentation, data classification and semiotic analysis of Charles Sanders Pierce. The results of research, related to the meanings contained in the emoticon, found that the user used emoticons for several reasons; to reinforce the message content, provide support, quip someone, express the feelings of sadness, express feelings of shame, encourage, apologize, express feelings of disappointment, and express feelings of gratitude. The use of WhatsApp emoticons should not be used unwisely. Emoticon which is used carelessly will cause misintrepretation of the messages meaning sent and can cause conflict among users of WhatsApp applications." @default.
