- W294304826 abstract "In Tokyo Bay, Mediterranean green crabs (Carcinus aestuarii) have successfully invaded and now coexist with several species of native shore crabs. We examined aspects of feeding behavior for C.aestuarii and one common native shore crab, Hemigrapsus takanoi, to improve our understanding of potential ecological interactions and impacts. Consumption rates, shell breaking ability and size selectivity were quantified using the black-pigmy mussel Xenostrobus securis as an example of typical decapod prey. The experiments revealed that (1) both species consumed similar amounts of the mussels flesh, (2) C.aestuarii targeted relatively small mussels due to their small-sized chelae, even though they achieve a larger maximum adult size than the native H.takanoi, (3) large H.takanoi consumed both small and median-sized mussels in equal proportions. Despite the slightly different feeding strategies of the two crabs, the optimal-sized prey for each crab species was similar, indicating a potential for food competition among co-occurring populations of C.aestuarii and H.takanoi in Tokyo Bay." @default.
