• W2943997029 abstract "Abstract Structural modification throughout the bulk of materials can be triggered by irradiation, depending on the incident energy. Electron beams are used to irradiate samples for several purposes, from sample analysis to structural changes. In Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) a beam of highly energetic electrons is used to analyze samples. During irradiation, interactions may occur between primary electrons (TEM electrons) and bulk sample. Accordingly, they can cause transitory or permanent modifications on the structure of a specimen. In this study, the formation of carbon nanotube-like structures has been obtained in situ during electron irradiation of polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs) in a Transmission Electron Microscopy. The main component of our PNPs is a copolymer based on methacrylic acid (PMA) and ethyl acrylate (PA) [1:1] polymers. This composition appears to be important in the nanotube-structures formation, since PMA degrades very rapidly when exposed to irradiation through scission schemes, while PA undergoes cross-linking. These structural modifications, from amorphous carbonaceous structure to crystalline ones, happen rapidly, on the order of ∼20 s. This mainly due to the high incident current density (∼108 A cm−2) transported by the electron radiation stemming from the microscope." @default.
