- W2944218340 abstract "Researchers have observed a significant increase in the use of hormonal therapies among patients with breast cancer in states that expanded Medicaid coverage, according to a study presented at the 11th American Association for Cancer Research Conference on The Science of Cancer Health Disparities in Racial/Ethnic Minorities and the Medically Underserved, which was held November 2 to 5, 2018, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Specifically, states that expanded their Medicaid programs from 2011 to 2017 experienced a 27% increase in prescriptions for hormonal therapy medications whereas states that did not expand their programs essentially had no increase, the study found. Hormonal therapy for women whose breast cancers are hormone-dependent can help to reduce disease recurrence and generally should be taken for 3 to 5 years after the initial treatment of surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiotherapy, according to study leader Michael Halpern, MD, PhD, associate professor at Temple University College of Public Health in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. For that reason, he and his colleagues sought to determine whether expanding Medicaid would lead to greater use of the therapies. Analyzing information from the Medicaid State Drug Utilization Data, they evaluated outpatient prescription rates and associated payments for 2 hormonal therapeutics, tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors, among women enrolled in Medicaid programs. Both generic and brand-name prescriptions were assessed. The findings demonstrated that prescriptions for all hormonal therapy medications and aromatase inhibitors increased by 27% and 29%, respectively, in Medicaid expansion states versus nonexpansion states. Patients who previously were uninsured gained new access to these therapies when Medicaid was expanded, according to Dr. Halpern. Moreover, investigators observed that the difference in prescription rates between the 2 groups of states continued to increase a year after the expansion. This shows that getting the coverage as a one- time event is not enough, Dr. Halpern says. As a whole, researchers say the findings underscore the importance of ensuring that cancer survivors, particularly those in underserved populations, have access to high-quality care and are able to receive the services and medications they need to prevent their disease from recurring." @default.
