There are several methods that have been used to improve thedamping such as using Power System Stabilizer (PSS), Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) device orHVDC Transmission system.The implementation of PSS needs valid and detail power system parameter data such as line data, generatordata, etc. These data are required to get the correct setting of PSS. Un-proper PSS setting can lead to powersystem instability instead of strengthen the power system. In Indonesian power system, line data andtransformer data can be easily collected but generator parameters data are very hard to obtain especially forold generator. The large number of generator installed in the system made the data collections took a lot of time.These conditions makes implementation of PSS is not a simple task in IndonesiaThe main principle of damping controller that is installed in the transmission line such as FACTS device is tocontrol the power flows. Based on these principles, direct load control can be used to improve the poweroscillation damping. Simulation using a simple Kundur’s two area power systems is conducted as model. Modalanalysis and sensitivity analysis are used to identify the load that having significant effect to the poweroscillations. Phase plane analysis is conducted to identify the switching time of the loads.Simulation shows with the proper switching time, power oscillations can be damped with direct load control.Loads in each area are switched off in particular order to control the power flows in transmission line. PMUmeasurement data are used as an input. This method can be used for temporary solution as long as dampingcontroller with PSS has not implemented yet." @default.
