• W2945297329 abstract "Pesticides are extensively used by farmers in the Niayes zone of Dakar regardless of good agricultural practices as evidenced by many authors. Some of them were either not registered or banned for agricultural use in Senegal. This situation raises concerns about the environmental impact and the human health risks. This work aimed to assess the presence of 21 pesticide molecules selected through a survey in soil and groundwater. For that purpose, 119 soil and 80 groundwater samples were collected at four different sites and analyzed by chromatographic methods. High contamination was evidenced with detection of 17 pesticides in soil and 15 in groundwater samples out of 21. Molecules found belong to various chemical groups. Organochlorine pesticides were quantitatively predominant in soil while organophosphates were detected with higher level in water. Dicofol, p,p’-DDE and dimethoate were the most frequently detected pesticides in soil with concentrations ranging from 4.28 to 24.54, 5.91 to 20.05 and 5.50 to 7.72 μg/kg, respectively. 56 % of groundwater samples showed at least one substance with level exceeding 0.1 μg/l. Pesticides frequently involved were dicofol (31 %), chlorpyrifos (28 %) and dimethoate (25 %). So actions to promote sustainable agriculture must be taken." @default.
