- W2945596175 abstract "The genetic disease drepanocytosis can now be treated and cured by means of an intrafamilial allograft or transplant of hematopoietic stem cells (CHS). This transplant has proved its worth on the medical level and has become quite common, particularly among young children. It gives them the status of a biological chimera because they acquire the bone marrow of a brother or a sister. How do they react to this invasive medical experience and its psychological consequences? This prospective study, using qualitative methodology based on drawings and the children’s own remarks, has made it possible to describe the experience of the transplant over a period of one year in three children aged 5 to 7, suffering from drepanocytosis. These children are confronted with modifications in the perception of themselves and the representation of time, fluctuating between breaking off and continuity. When they are dealing with such an ordeal, we note an oscillation between a need for mastery and a need for its opposite, passivity. The transplant will perturb their psychic envelopes and the qualities they possess. Moreover, an issue of donation and debt will emerge. Indeed, the transplant causes an upheaval in the construction of the childrens’ personality, with reminiscences of archaic processes. The representation of change for these children and the feeling of being cured which results are complex, and they imply a long and painful, veritable work of mourning as concerns the disease. It is a period of vulnerability for the child which necessitates psychological accompaniment." @default.
