- W2946836986 abstract "In the Southern African context, any reference to land in the context of ethical discourse is immediately related to matters of conquest, ownership, restitution and redistribution. This is obviously situated within the context of the destructive legacy of imperial conquest, colonial rule, segregation (as a British policy), apartheid and “separate development”. To discuss land use, the proper stewardship of land and the extraction of natural resources assumes access to such land and hence reflects the position of landlords rather than the landless. From this perspective there seems to be no point of entry for an appropriation of the notion of a “land ethic” as proposed by Aldo Leopold, followed by J. Baird Callicot and further developed by Holmes Rolston in the North American context. Leopold’s holism may even conjure up associations with his contemporary Jan Smuts, the former South African prime minister, who is often quoted in this regard. Nevertheless, an ecocentric approach such as the land ethic is not too far removed from the ecological wisdom embedded in more traditional rural villages across the African continent. Numerous scholars of African traditional religion and its interplay express this notion of belonging to the land with Christianity, including Gabriel Setiloane, Harvey Sindima and LaurentiMagesa. It is also expressed in the so-called Machakos statement entitled “The Earth belongs to God”. In fact, such an ecocentric approach may serve as source of inspiration for resistance against colonial conquest and a settler view of land. It is another question whether such an approach remains viable within the context of an urbanised Africa, shaped by taxis, spaza shops, cell phones and soccer. Such questions will be explored in this contribution." @default.
