- W2947333854 abstract "Craniofacial tissue engineering strategies have advanced remarkably over the past two decades consequent to the progress made in the fields of biology, engineering, and materials science. Because of the complexity of the craniofacial region, consisting of bone, cartilage, soft tissue, and neurovascular bundles, the regeneration of the craniofacial tissue is often convoluted. Tissue engineering approaches generally involve using a combination of cells, bioactive molecules, and biomaterials. Scientific advances in biomaterials, stem cells, growth and differentiation factors, and biomimetic environments have created unique opportunities to fabricate tissues in the laboratory from combinations of scaffold, cells, and biologically active molecules. A wide variety of biomaterials have been used for craniofacial bone augmentation. In general, they consist of either bioactive ceramics, bioactive glasses, biological, or synthetic polymers, and composites of these. The major challenge is to foster biomaterials that can match both the mechanical and biological context of real bone tissue matrix and support the vascularization of large tissue constructs. The development of new materials and progressing techniques is expected to broaden the diversity of applications of biomaterials in craniofacial tissue engineering and regenerative dentistry. The advances in tissue engineering and stem cell–based therapies will bring new dimensions to the regeneration of craniofacial structures." @default.
