- W2947564653 abstract "The purpose of the program is to encourage students and nurses to explore the many factors that can affect clients’ health, well being, and engagement with the health care system. Introduce an effective method to engage nurses in exploring the population groups of their patients. Rather than relying on textbook tables to describe “typical” practices of different ethnic groups, an assignment was written to involve the students in active exploration of the factors that may affect their patients’ well being in pregnancy. Students are introduced to their “client” through an unfolding case study. Information provided includes age, language spoken, education, address, work history of client and significant other, diet and religious considerations, access to transportation, and history of previous pregnancies (if applicable). Discussion takes place in which the students identify population groups to which they assign their client. After identifying the overlapping population groups of the client, the student determines specific characteristics of those populations that may benefit or harm the client over the term of pregnancy. Students follow the class curriculum while researching information. During the 1st week, students explore genetic and environmental factors that may affect their client’s pregnancy. Later in the semester, students identify appropriate screening tests for a client of their identified population. Eventually, students receive notification that their client is in labor. They research acceptable methods of pain management. When notified of birth, they research possible feeding methods that may be accepted by their population. Last, students research information on child care availability, costs, and health care resources available to their client population. Questions regarding specific populations are included on tests. Students present their findings to faculty biweekly and to the class at the end of the semester. One outcome is that students can identify and recognize factors that can influence pregnancy outcomes. Nurses who can investigate their patient’s history in this manner may deliver improved nursing care." @default.
