- W2947875065 abstract "Evaluating the effects of treatment programs is an essential part of evidence-based practice. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) represent a small proportion of studies of intervention effects in correctional settings. They are most successfully used in medicine in circumstances where it is possible to define reasonably clearly what the treatment is (e.g., a drug) and to develop a credible but biologically inert placebo. Quasi-experimental designs are the main alternative. Studies using these designs can be prospective examinations of new or model programs. Recidivism analyses will always be important for accountability for social service and government agencies. However, much of the research on program effects is drawn into the endeavor of demonstrating that the program is linked to lower proportions of people recidivating. Finally, the chapter reviews some general issues in program outcome evaluation research that need consideration in order to expand the evidence base on “what works” and make it more useful." @default.
