- W2948937044 abstract "In this chapter XV (Chose promise. Etude sur la promesse a partir de Hobbes et quelques autres, PUF, Paris, 2014), our so-called PSS (Pacta sunt servanda) hypothesis is (modestly) confronted with the famous Essai sur le don. The Maussian gift is not a “free gift,” and nevertheless is not a real trade either, but a complex system of social obligations. I try to show that Mauss’s deep analyses are perhaps not so different from some things Hobbes had to say. The question is always, according to Mauss, to “substitute alliance (my emphasis), gifts, and commerce for war, isolation, and stagnation.” These three words are likely to evoke for us the most famous sentence of the Leviathan: “and the life of man is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short,” about the state of nature. In this world of small societies without any state, the non-market system of exchanges that Mauss called “gift and counter-gift” can take place, to give rise to alliances, but in agreement with the weight given by Hobbes to the blazing passion of “vain glory:” “Glory maketh men invade for trifles, as a word, a smile, a different opinion, and any other sign of undervalue” (still in Lv, ch. 13). Anyway, the Maussian gift could be interpreted as a species of the more generic concept of a pact." @default.
