- W294984313 abstract "The hemorrhagic fever viruses are a group of some 15 single-stranded RNA viruses from four different taxonomic families that cause a severe illness in humans characterized by defective coagulation that may result in bleeding and increased vascular permeability that can lead to shock. With the exception of dengue and yellow fever, the hemorrhagic fever viruses are maintained in rodents or other animals and only accidentally infect humans. The geographic distribution of each disease therefore reflects the range of its reservoir host. The illnesses with the highest case-fatality rates, Ebola and Marburg hemorrhagic fever, have been studied the most extensively in laboratory animals. This work indicates that hemorrhagic fever results from the ability of the causative agents to replicate to high yield in human macrophages, suppress type I interferon responses, and disseminate widely to these and other cells throughout the body, causing a massive release of proinflammatory mediators. Direct injury to tissues, especially the liver, contributes to disease severity. High case-fatality rates also reflect a terminal failure of adaptive immunity, similar to that seen in septic shock, that results from viral infection of dendritic cells and a massive loss of lymphocytes through programmed cell death over the course of illness." @default.
