• W2950265795 abstract "This contribution addresses unavoidable surface roughness changes caused by the nitriding of ferrous alloys. The changes are very minimal when the case is built only of the diffusion layer or when the process is performed on steels at low temperature not exceeding 450°C. Formation of the compound layer is the main reason for the roughness change. Resultant surface roughness is dependent on initial roughness. There is no major difference between various nitriding processes forming layers of the same thickness. Exception is when the same compound layer is formed by high-density plasmas used in the cold-walled equipment. When this is used, it may result in an additional roughening of the surface caused by very intensive reactive sputtering and redeposition of nitrides on the surface. A major difference in the roughening effect of the surface exists between plasma and gas nitriding when applied to gray cast irons. In this situation, gas nitriding may significantly increase roughness, especially the Rz parameter of that iron. This effect is a result of a locally deeper penetration of ammonia molecules into cast iron in the space between graphite inclusions and the matrix and leading to the formation of a compound layer of uneven thickness.
